About this artwork

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, an English poet and artist, was one of the major creators of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This was a 19th-century collective of artists, critics, and writers who were all about presenting conventional themes like religion in sophisticated layouts with as much realism as possible. Rossetti gave us his take on Helen of Troy, who, according to Greek mythology, was Zeus's daughter, the wife of King Menelaus, and the most beautiful woman ever. In 1863, he used the famous model Annie Miller as his muse for this piece.

He was born in London to Italian parents and was educated at King's College School. His work was deeply influenced by his early love of poetry, and his later interest in medieval Italian art.
