About the artist

Born on April 2, 1788, Elizabeth Ronalds was an acclaimed English horticultural illustrator. Her exquisite lithographs featured in her father, Hugh Ronalds' book 'Pyrus malus Brentfordiensis' (1831). Even today, this work is celebrated by the RHS as an authoritative resource on horticulture, regarded as one of the most aesthetically pleasing English fruit books.

Ronalds utilised her talent to catalogue various fruits and flowers. Not only did she portray those found in her family's nursery, but she also depicted exotic species from nearby Kew Gardens and the RHS garden. Her efforts supported her father and brothers in broadening their stock inventory.

Apples were a recurring theme in her work, reflecting the nursery's specialty. One of Ronalds' techniques involved painting individual apples from varying cultivars, later copying them into a collage. With her frequent use of a grid layout she effectively created a catalogue showcasing the varieties
