About the artist

Ernest Montaut (1878-1909), a pioneering French poster artist, pioneered novel artistic methods like speed lines and perspective distortion to portray velocity, methods still in use today.

Launching his printmaking venture in the late 1800s, he employed lithographic stones for image outlining and the Pochoir process, producing vibrant adverts for auto parts makers and sponsors. Montaut’s prints, capturing the thrill of early motorised transport, became popular records of French racing events from the mid-1890s. They showcased in vogue Parisian stores, capturing the era's daring spirit.
