About this artwork

Back in the late 1920s, the Empire Marketing Board commissioned a series of posters. These visuals were designed to encourage intra-empire trade and depict a picture-perfect snapshot of life in the British Empire's territories and colonies. Today, the original copies of these posters are safely stored in The National Archives, UK.

About the artist

Frederick Charles Herrick trained as a graphoc artist at Leicester School of Art and London's Royal College of Art. His decades-long tenure as a teacher at Brighton, the Royal College of Art, and the Sir John Cass Institute commenced post-World War II.

Herrick was famed for his poster artwork, particularly for London's public transportation, infusing the city's daily commute with fascinating visuals. His work extended to the design of the Wembley British Empire Exhibition's Lion logo in 1924-25 and large-scale billboards for the Empire Marketing Board. He also collaborated with the Baynard Press, notably for London Transport. Brighton classes under Herrick covered mural arts.
