About this artwork

In 1897, Swiss artist Félix Vallotton created a woodcut print called ‘The Lie’. This piece of art captures a romantic meeting between two lovers in a setting reminiscent of the late 19th-century. It's a part of a collection of ten woodcuts named ‘Intimités’, which were printed by the forward-thinking publisher La Revue. This series explores the emotional dynamics of the Parisian bourgeoisie. The title 'The Lie' hints at a sense of distrust in the couple's relationship, reflecting Vallotton's skeptical perspective on love.

About the artist

Born on December 28, 1865 in Lausanne, Switzerland, Félix Vallotton was an artist of unique originality, despite not achieving the celebrity of his pioneering contemporaries. He carved a distinctive path through an array of artistic expressions, including portraits, satirical prints, interior narratives, landscapes, and still lifes.

His early talent in printmaking attracted the attention of artists Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, leading to his inclusion in the Nabis group. Although he didn't quite fit in with the Nabis, it ushered him into a vibrant literary and bohemian circle. Through these relationships, Vallotton found a distinctive path, gaining prominence via his innovative satirical woodcuts for progressive left-wing publications.

Vallotton's journey didn't stop at printmaking. As his career matured, he shifted focus towards painting, applying his printmaking techniques to his works. His unique blend of Realism and Symbolism resulted in pieces that emanated an uncanny psychological tension. Vallotton's death occurred in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Paris, France on December 29, 1925, but his legacy persists in his compelling body of work.
