About this artwork

Frida Kahlo, a celebrated Mexican surrealist painter, was known for her self-portraits. She drew inspiration from the prevalent culture of her country and delved into aspects such as identity, postcolonialism, societal class, and gender within Mexico. In 1940, following her divorce from her fellow artist Diego Rivera, Kahlo created 'Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair'. This was her first portrait post-divorce, where she portrayed herself in an oversised man's suit with a short haircut, symbolising her newfound freedom.

About the artist

Frida Kahlo , born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954), was a Mexican painter known for her self-portraits. She was a prominent figure in the Surrealist movement and her works are often characterised by their stark portrayals of pain. Kahlo's life was marked by physical and emotional suffering, including a bus accident that left her with lifelong injuries. She was married to the famous muralist Diego Rivera and the two were key figures in the Mexican art scene. Kahlo's works have been celebrated internationally and her life story has been the subject of several films.
