About this artwork

Frida Kahlo was a well known Mexican artist known for her surrealist style and autobiographical works. Her art was deeply influenced by Mexico's vibrant culture, and she used it as a platform to delve into topics such as identity, postcolonialism, gender, and class within Mexican society. In 1942, she created the piece 'Self Portrait with Monkey and Parrot', where she portrays herself with a serious expression, her distinctive thick black eyebrows standing out. Kahlo often incorporated wild plants, like the ones from her childhood home's garden, and exotic animals into her paintings, symbolizing her deep appreciation for nature.
