About this artwork

Frida Kahlo was a well known Mexican surrealist painter best known for her self-representative art pieces. Her work was heavily influenced by Mexico's prevalent culture and often touched on themes of identity, gender, class, and postcolonialism within the Mexican society. In 1939, she created 'The Two Fridas', her first large-scale oil painting. This work of art showcases Kahlo in two different attires - a Victorian white dress symbolizing her European roots, and a traditional Tehuana dress reflecting her Mexican heritage. Furthermore, Kahlo incorporated blood vessels in both portraits, a reference to a bus accident she suffered at the age of eighteen that resulted in enduring pain and numerous surgeries throughout her life.
