About the artist

George Jones (1786-1869) was not only a well known British painter but also an army officer. Best known for his stunning military-themed paintings, Jones was the offspring of the famous mezzotint engraver, John Jones.

His artistic journey began with training at the Royal Academy schools right at the start of the 1800s, prior to his service in the Peninsular War. For his exceptional depiction of the Battle of Waterloo, he was rewarded with a prise of 200 guineas by the British Institution in 1820. He created a different take on the same theme two years later, earning him an additional 200 guineas. His talent was recognised when he was named a Royal Academician in 1824.
