About the artist

Born in Dresden in 1932, Gerhard Richter is a well-known German visual artist with an impressive career that has spanned over six decades. Considered among the most influential contemporary German artists, Richter's body of work is eclectic, ranging from abstract and photorealistic paintings to photography and glass art. Richter has consistently defied being pigeonholed into any one style, a stance viewed by many as his critique of the entrenched ideologies of painting.

The impact of Richter's family ties to the Nazi movement is often evident in his artwork, which delves into his complex relationship with German history. He frequently employs photos as the basis for his works and uses an innovative blend of realism and abstraction. This approach has solidified his status as a pivotal figure in Post-War German Art.

Richter's signature works often feature blurred images that evoke the feel of out-of-focus photographs. These effects are achieved by smearing wet paint, creating a visual that seems detached from reality.

Today, Richter resides in Cologne, where he continues to create thought-provoking artworks that touch on themes like identity politics in art movements and global cultural issues.
