About this artwork

This art piece offers a detailed glimpse into the top sections of Giovanni Canaletto's 'The Upper Reaches of the Grand Canal with S. Simeone Piccolo'. The initial artwork beautifully captures a broad view of the day-to-day hustle and bustle of the Grand Canal flowing through Venice. Spanning across the canal to the left, there's the San Simeone Piccolo church, unveiled in 1738. A workers' cabin near the church indicates that Canaletto might have created this piece during the church's final construction phase. This reproduction is color-matched to the original and has been given the green light by the National Gallery. Each purchase contributes to the museum's work.

About the artist

Born in Venice to a theatrical scenery painter, Giovanni Antonio Canalt, more famously known as Canaletto, learned his craft early on. He initially studied under his father, before potentially receiving guidance from Dutch painter van Wittel. Canaletto then ventured to Rome, refining his skills in perspective from well known architectural artist, Panini.

By 1720, upon his return to Venice, Canaletto gained recognition as a city scene painter and engraver. His talent was quickly noticed by the British consul, Joseph Smith, who became one of his ardent supporters and encouraged him to travel to Britain. But before this, Canaletto set out for a two-year stint in Rome (1740-41), and only made his maiden voyage to England in 1745.

Canaletto stayed in Britain until 1755, with only a couple of return trips to Venice. He created numerous well known English scenes and brought life to many southern Palladian villas. In 1763, he earned a place in the Venetian Academy.

Canaletto's studio in Venice churned out a plethora of paintings and etchings, so much so that his name became synonymous with 18th-century Venice. His works were detailed observations of the city he knew so well, capturing its festive vibrancy, daily life, and ever-changing atmosphere with a clear eye and a love for colour.
