About this artwork

A photo of modern British artist David Hockney was snapped by Godfrey Argent back in 1969. Argent, famous for his royal clientele, usually produced black and white shots with a formal feel. But for this portrait of Hockney, he got a bit playful and placed a magnifying glass right in front of the artist's face, amplifying his iconic blond hair and round glasses. Every purchase helps to support the work of the National Portrait Gallery.

About the artist

Known for his iconic monochrome portraits of high society figures, Godfrey Argent (1937-2006) was an esteemed English photographer. He started his career in photography while serving in the Household Cavalry, eventually becoming a favored portraitist for royalty, including a young Prince of Wales and Princess Anne. In 1960, his talent was recognised when he became an Associate Member of the Royal Photographic Society and winner of the British Army Photographic Competition.

Argent took over the business of well known portraitist Walter Bird in 1967, and it wasn't long before he was appointed the official photographer for the National Portrait Gallery's National Photographic Record. Also holding the position of official photographer for the Royal Society, he had a steady gig taking portraits of the ever-changing cast of The Mousetrap. In honor of Argent's significant contributions to photography, a namesake award was established in 2007 to support the careers of aspiring photographers.
