About the artist

Born as Hashiguchi Kiyoshi in Kagoshima on December 21, 1880, Goyo was schooled in the traditional Kano painting style by his samurai father from a young age of ten. As he matured, he moved to Tokyo, adopted the name 'Goyo' and turned his artistic focus towards Western oil painting. His talent shone through when he graduated as the top student from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1905.

He was raised during a time of great transition and western influence in Japan, Hashiguchi Goyo was the offspring of a Samurai warrior. Despite his frail health, Goyo left an impactful legacy in the Japanese art world with his select 14 prints, exquisite prints, including four landscapes, a nature print of ducks, and eight elegantly sensitive portraits of women. All were created between the age of thirty-five and shortly before his untimely death at forty-one. Each one of these prints stands as a pinnacle of modern Japanese art, making them a valuable acquisition for collectors and cementing Goyo's timeless renown. Had his health permitted, Goyo could have become the leading light in twentieth-century Japanese art.
