About the artist

Born in 1918 in Los Angeles, Henry Clarke became well known for his fascinating snapshots of the glamorous world of haute couture during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1946, he relocated to New York, securing a job crafting backdrops at Vogue's photography studios.

He had the opportunity to work with the likes of Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, and Horst P Horst - each possessing incredibly unique styles and techniques. Clarke's role was to arrange the sets, an experience that enriched his understanding of their different approaches.

Clarke was fortunate to secure a spot at the esteemed New School for Social Research, under the tutelage of the legendary Alexey Brodovitch. Here, he refined his technical photography skills, while also absorbing insights on merging the fantastical element of fashion photography with the raw immediacy of photojournalism.

Over time, Clarke became a staple photographer for Vogue, crafting a unique aesthetic that seamlessly blended high fashion with a journalistic approach, giving birth to a style that was both elegant and grounded in reality.
