About the artist

Born in Chichester, United Kingdom on November 25, 1842, Heywood Hardy was a well known British painter famed for his unique interpretation of 18th-century hunting and daily life scenes. He started peddling his art pieces at a tender age of 17 and saved enough to study at Paris' prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. After his studies, Hardy returned to England and his artwork became a hot commodity, attracting affluent patrons who commissioned him frequently.

Hardy also gained memberships in various respected societies like The Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Additionally, he illustrated for several publications, such as The Illustrated London News and The Graphic Magazine. In his later years, he stirred controversy transitioning from animal subjects to biblical scenes, notably images of Christ in the Sussex countryside.

Today, Hardy's works are displayed in prominent museums like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Bury Art Museum. Hardy died in 1933 in West Sussex, United Kingdom.
