About the artist

Whistler, who studied painting under Charles Gleyre in Paris since 1855, drew inspiration from Corot, Courbet, and the pre-Raphaelites. He settled in Venice in 1879, spending 14 months perfecting his watercolour sketches and creating fifty etchings. Known for his wit and clipped remarks, he championed "art for art" and likened his pieces to music, calling them "symphonies" or "Nocturnes". In his quest for formal harmony, he often relied on random effects, shying away from any resemblance to reality.

Whistler's iconic works, balancing reality and abstraction, are hard to miss. His technique involved limiting his palette to reduce tonal contrast, applying light paint in a gentle brushstroke. His artwork mostly centered around everyday delights, capturing scenes and objects aesthetically.

Whistler was inspired by real-world objects and landscapes, which he abstractly represented in his art. He greatly contributed to the transition from realism to abstraction, championing the Aesthetic movement's appreciation for "art for art's sake". His abstract works were marked by colours conveying emotions, while shapes represented real-life objects.
