About this artwork

Johannes Vermeer was a painter from the Dutch Baroque Period, famous for his detailed portrayal of interior scenes. He is celebrated for his skilful manipulation and application of light in his artworks, often showing meticulous attention to detail and using costly pigments. Vermeer finished 'The Lacemaker' somewhere between 1669 and 1670, which is considered the smallest work he ever created. This painting showcases abstract features where, for example, red and white lace appears to flow from the cushion like a liquid, an unconventional depiction for that era.
