About this artwork

William Turner, also known as Joseph Mallord William Turner in his era, was a well known English painter specializing in romantic landscapes. Turner spent a considerable amount of time sketching Conway Castle, located along the northern coastline of Wales, before bringing the scene to life in this vivid painting. The piece strikingly portrays the moment the sun breaks through the clouds, casting light upon the fishermen below the castle as they wrestle to bring their boats to shore.
