About the artist

Born around 1726, Katsukawa Shunshô, originally known as Katsumiyagawa Yūsuke, died on January 19, 1793. He first dipped his brushes into Japanese style painting as a student under Katsukawa Shunsui and Ko Sukoku, before branching out into woodblock prints. His early masterpieces were deeply influenced by the work of Harunobu Suzuki.

Not long after, he began to specialise in crafting head and bust portraits of actors, highlighting their unique traits within his designs. Additionally, Shunshô’s bijin-ga images, which are woodblock prints and paintings of beautiful women, are now cherished collectibles for ukiyo-e collectors.

As a mentor, Shunshô nurtured many students in the art of woodblock design. Among them, Shunro, who later adopted the name Hokusai Katsushika, was the most well known.
