About the artist

Known as Max, Leslie MacDonald Gill (1884–1947) was a multifaceted artist and educator, dabbling in architecture, mural painting, calligraphy and design. He was deemed as one of the most influential graphic artists of the early 20th century, particularly revered for his illustrative maps. Beyond map-making, he also left his thumbprint on book illustrations, church murals, architecture, and lettering.

Born in Brighton, Sussex, Max was the sibling of fellow artists Eric and Cecil Gill. His education spanned the Royal Naval Academy, Chichester School of Art, and the Central School of Arts and Crafts. He kick-started his career as an architect, and his expertise eventually led to his fellowship at RIBA. His architectural prowess can be seen in landmarks like the Lincoln Cathedral and House of Commons, where his murals are particularly noted.

In addition to being a designer for the Imperial War Graves Commission, Max was also a lecturer on architecture. His talents extended to poster design for the Empire Marketing Board and London's Underground Railway. His influence continues to inspire modern cartographers and graphic artists.
