About the artist
Peake's talent for the grotesque was truly remarkable, and this, coupled with his inclination towards Romantic elements in British art, was showcased in a wide array of visual and verbal formats. He is primarily recognised for his trilogy of novels, Titus Groan (1946), Gormenghast (1950), and Titus Alone (1959), where his imaginative drawing style perfectly complemented his grotesque Gothic fantasy. However, these books were originally published without his illustrations. Besides this trilogy, Peake also illustrated other books like Stevenson's Treasure Island (1949) and some of his own works, such as the instructional manual, The Craft of the Lead Pencil (1946).
