About this artwork

The Supper at Emmaus', a magnificent piece of domestic religious art, was created by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio at the peak of his popularity. This piece brilliantly encapsulates the climactic point of the Biblical narrative when two disciples of Jesus realise that the man they sheltered is the resurrected Christ. The surprise is evident in their reactions, and the dramatic lighting emphasises the power of the moment. The original color matching of this print has been certified by the National Gallery. Plus, every sale contributes to the museum's ongoing work.

About the artist

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) was an Italian Baroque painter who revolutionised the art of his time with his dramatic use of light and shadow. His works, which often depicted religious scenes, were characterised by a naturalistic style and intense emotion. Caravaggio's personal life was turbulent, and he was known for his violent behavior. He was also a master of tenebrism, a style of painting in which most of the image is in darkness, with only a few areas of light. Caravaggio's influence on the Baroque period was immense, and his works remain some of the most iconic in the history of art.

Also associated with: Rome, Italy, Baroque, Tenebrism, Naturalism, Contarelli Chapel, Death of the Virgin, David with the Head of Goliath.
