Michelangelo Buonarroti, born on 6 March 1475 and died on 18 February 1564, was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest artists of all time and his works are among the most famous in the world. His influence on the development of Western art was unparalleled and his masterpieces, such as the Pietà and the David, are iconic. He was also a highly accomplished architect, designing the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Michelangelo's personal life was marked by his devout Catholicism and his complex relationship with the powerful Medici family.
