About the artist

Born in Mexico, Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957) made his way to New York in 1923. Recognised for his dual roles as both a passionate artist and a perceptive ethnologist, Covarrubias had a deep-rooted fascination with social and cultural customs.

Despite being primarily self-educated, he made a name for himself by creating vibrant illustrations and well known celebrity caricatures. He regularly contributed to high-profile magazines like Vogue, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair. This exposure led to him crossing paths with some of the most acclaimed individuals of the Harlem Renaissance. These included the well known singer, Ethel Waters, authors Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, and even the blues composer, W.C. Handy.
