About this artwork

The aftermath of World War I saw society yearning for the comfort and reliability of tradition after the chaos caused by the war. Consequently, an art movement aptly named 'the return to order' began to emerge. This movement was identifiable by its lean towards more conventional art practices, as a direct reaction against the intense avant-garde inclinations leading to the war. However, the two women depicted in this particular painting, while clothed in traditional attire, have awkwardly heavy hands and feet. This suggests that Picasso may have been satirizing the 'return to order' movement.
