About this artwork

The French artist Pierre Bonnard, famous for his stylised decorative paintings and his daring use of colour, was a significant figure in the late 19th century art scene. The artwork 'Lane at Vernonnet' was created by him in 1912, around the same time he purchased a home in Vernonnet. This quaint village is located on the banks of the River Seine, in the northwest of Paris. Relocating prompted Bonnard to leave behind the sombre colours that characterised his earlier works. He started exploring with a wider spectrum of colours, incorporating vibrant tones such as pinks, purples, and greens.
