About this artwork

Raphael, a well known architect and painter from the High Renaissance era, was wildly admired for the sheer simplicity and clear forms in his work. He's usually lumped together with Michelangelo and da Vinci, forming the proverbial trinity of the greatest masters of that time. During 1509-1511, Raphael created 'The School of Athens', a stunning fresco that adorns the rooms named the Stanze di Raffaello located in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.

About the artist

Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520) was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. He is best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Raphael was greatly influenced by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. He was born in Urbino, Italy and died in Rome at the age of 37. He was a prolific artist and his work was highly sought after during his lifetime.
