About the artist

Under the mentorship of the celebrated Hungarian designer György Kepes at Brooklyn College, Saul Bass found himself freelancing for various ad agencies, including Warner Bros, before eventually moving to Los Angeles. There, he plunged into the world of commercial graphic design. By the 1940s, his career shifted towards Hollywood, where he created promotional print materials. In 1952, Saul took a bold step and founded his own firm, Saul Bass & Associates.

Bass's career took a leap in 1954 when filmmaker Otto Preminger commissioned him to craft a poster for Carmen Jones. His remarkable work caught Preminger's eye, leading to more collaborations on film title sequences. Bass revolutionised this field, demonstrating that title sequences could enhance a film's overall experience. He cleverly merged audio and visual elements to set a movie's tone from the beginning.

Hollywood recognised Bass's unique contributions after his work on films like The Seven Year Itch and Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm. He further enhanced his reputation through partnerships with Alfred Hitchcock, producing groundbreaking title sequences for North by Northwest, Vertigo, and Psycho. His novel approach to kinetic typography replaced the old-fashioned static titles, creating a new standard in Hollywood.
