About the artist

Landseer was a prominent figure in 19th-century British art. His work is held in Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Kenwood House and the Wallace Collection in London. Notably, he partnered with fellow artist Frederick Richard Lee on several projects.

Landseer's reputation as an unrivalled animal artist ensured his immense popularity in Victorian Britain. His work was well-received across all social classes, with copies of his art common in middle-class homes, while he was equally popular among the aristocracy.

Queen Victoria was among his high-profile patrons, commissioning several paintings from him. Beginning with portraits of royal pets, Landseer's subjects evolved into depictions of ghillies and gamekeepers. He even painted a portrait of the queen herself, the year before her marriage as a gift for Prince Albert.

His famous painting, ""The Monarch of the Glen"" dating back to 1851, is now exhibited at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh. Landseer had a special connection with Scotland, especially the Highlands, which he visited in 1824. This region provided inspiration and subjects for many of his noteworthy paintings.
