About the artist
Sir Stanley Spencer CBE RA (30 June 1891 – 14 December 1959) was a British painter known for his landscapes and biblical scenes. He was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and was influenced by the work of William Blake. Spencer was born in Cookham, Berkshire and studied at the Slade School of Art in London. He was a war artist during World War I and was knighted in 1959 for his services to art. He was known for his use of bright colours and his unique style of painting.
