About the artist

Sir John Soane truly appreciated the significance of architectural sketches. At the age of just 23, his architectural design and draughtsmanship prowess earned him the Royal Academy gold medal in 1776, setting him on the path to professional triumph. His portfolio eventually amassed a staggering 22,000 drawings from other notable artists and architects, along with 8,000 surviving drafts from his own office.

His Drawing Office was located in his home on Lincoln's Inn Fields where Soane's apprentices and draughtsmen brought architectural ideas to life, motivated by his comprehensive collection. It acted as an incubator for future architectural minds.

Soane's collection is a global scholarly treasure. He was the first architect to attempt to secure the best design examples for future architectural professionals, he compiled existing sketches from Renaissance masters and top British architects from the 17th and 18th centuries. These were complemented by 9,000 drawings either from Soane himself or his pupils, chronicling his student years, his stint in Italy, and his architectural practice from 1780 to the 1830s.
