The Painter's Daughters chasing a Butterfly' is an incomplete painting featuring Thomas Gainsborough's daughters, Mary and Margaret. They were his only children who survived past infancy. Many believe that the elusive butterfly in the painting symbolises life's fragility and the transitory phase of childhood. This print has been color-matched to the original painting and got the approval from the National Gallery. Every purchase made contributes to the museum's operations.

About the artist

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was an English painter and printmaker. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy and is best known for his portraits and landscapes. He was a master of the Rococo style, which was popular in England during the 18th century. His works were influenced by the Dutch masters, particularly Rembrandt and Rubens. He was also known for his sensitive and sympathetic portrayal of his sitters. Gainsborough was a successful artist in his lifetime and was highly regarded by his contemporaries.
