About the artist

Tom Artin is a multi talented Rockland County-based artist, photographer, musician, and even a scholar. Capturing everything from landscapes to portraits, his black and white photos embrace the rich tonality this medium can offer. His work, whether it's a close-up of a flower from his own garden or a bustling Paris street scene, exudes a distinct, painterly quality, the result of his keen composition, acute sensitivity to his subjects, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Artin's fascination with photography began in his teens, culminating in a homemade darkroom and a senior chemistry project dedicated to photographic chemistry. He then ventured into academia, earning both a B.A. and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University. For a while, he balanced his love for photography with a career as a medieval scholar and college teacher until 1979 when he decided to dedicate his life to jazz music.

Artin's heart remains with fine-art photography and he is still passionate about capturing the world's beauty, travelling the globe to immortalise light-filled moments of people and places.
