About the artist
Utagawa Fusatane, active between 1854 and 1888, was a Tokyo-based print designer and protege of Utagawa Sadafusa. He signed his work as Ōsai, Isshōsai, or Ippyōsai, though his real name was Murai Seima. His expertise encompassed fukeiga (landscape pictures), bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women), fūzokuga (depictions of customs), and of kaika-e (representations of the modernization of Japan). His bijin work mirrored the styles of Utagawa Kunisada and Sadafusa, while his landscapes echoed the influence of Utagawa Hiroshige.
