About the artist
Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) was a Japanese artist of the ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and paintings. He was the leading artist of the Utagawa school and was one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Toyokuni I was a master of the genre of actor prints, and his works are known for their bold compositions and dynamic figures. He was also a prolific illustrator of kabuki plays and other works of literature. Toyokuni I was a major influence on the development of ukiyo-e, and his works are still highly sought after today.
