About the artist
From the 1880s, Hatherell's illustrations appeared in various magazines like The Graphic and Harpers. Despite the crude printing technology and low-quality paper of his era that often diminished the delicacy of his work, he resourcefully employed strong compositions and striking contrasts to ensure his work withstood the publication process.
He travelled to Australia when commissioned by Cassell's for their 1890 publication, Picturesque Australasia. On returning, he made Brondesbury, northwest London his home, his garden there frequently featuring in his paintings. Hatherell died on December 7, 1928.
