About this artwork

Alphonse Mucha, a Czech creative who dabbled in painting, illustration, and graphic art, spent most of his career in Paris, France. He initially got into poster design as a way to make ends meet, but over time he made a name for himself with his unique and ornate designs. Among his creations, there's a sketch he did for a poster showing a woman clutching a glass for Ruinart, which happens to be the oldest Champagne house in France.

About the artist

Alphonse Mucha (24 July 1860 – 14 July 1939) was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist, best known for his distinct style and his images of women. He was born in the town of Ivančice, Moravia and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later in Paris. His work was heavily influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Mucha's work was often used to promote the Art Nouveau style and he was a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement. He was also a successful portrait painter and illustrator.
