About this artwork

Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian Jewish artist who mostly did his paintings and sculptures in France. In 1916, he did a painting called 'Portrait of Jacques & Berthe Lipchitz' where he portrayed his pal, Jacques Lipchitz, a sculptor, standing next to his wife, Berthe, who was seated. This piece is unique because it's one of only two double portraits that Modigliani ever painted, and it's recognised for the intriguing way it contrasts two different personalities. Berthe was a Russian poet, and Modigliani depicted her with a stretched face and big eyes, which is a stark contrast to Lipchitz's small eyes and distorted nose.

About the artist

Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He was a leading figure in the early 20th century avant-garde movement, and his style was influenced by African, Greek, Egyptian and Byzantine art. He was known for his elongated figures and portraits, and his works are often characterised by their mask-like faces and elongated necks. Modigliani's personal life was marked by poverty, illness and addiction, and he died at the age of 35.
