About this artwork

Amedeo Modigliani was a Jewish Italian artist, famous for his sculpture and painting, and spent most of his time working in France. In 1919, he created the 'Portrait of Mario Varvogli'. This painting showcases Mario Varvogli, a musician from Belgium who was close to Modigliani. The portrait shows Varvogli sitting with his legs crossed, donning a suit, jacket, and fedora, with his gaze fixed on the viewer. Like many of Modigliani's portraits, Varvogli's face and neck are lengthened, and his eyes are depicted as almond-shaped.

About the artist

Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He was a leading figure in the early 20th century avant-garde movement, and his style was influenced by African, Greek, Egyptian and Byzantine art. He was known for his elongated figures and portraits, and his works are often characterised by their mask-like faces and elongated necks. Modigliani's personal life was marked by poverty, illness and addiction, and he died at the age of 35.
