About this artwork

In the early 20th century, specifically around 1910, an Italian Jewish artist named Amedeo Modigliani embarked on a quest to create a fresh sculptural language. His inspiration came from African and Ancient Greek artifacts. One of his preparatory sketches, titled 'Profile Of A Head', is a clear illustration of this. Modigliani's unique sculptural heads were known for their elongated faces. To make this sketch, he used a sleek black line and drew the head from a side view to emphasise the stylised features. The sketch is currently available as a excellent digital print on Basix Verge 220gsm paper.

About the artist

Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He was a leading figure in the early 20th century avant-garde movement, and his style was influenced by African, Greek, Egyptian and Byzantine art. He was known for his elongated figures and portraits, and his works are often characterised by their mask-like faces and elongated necks. Modigliani's personal life was marked by poverty, illness and addiction, and he died at the age of 35.
