About this artwork

Andy Warhol called New York City home from 1949 until he died. His film 'Empire' came to life when he propped his camera on a tripod and recorded the Empire State Building, an iconic New York City skyscraper, from dawn to dusk. Warhol explained that the purpose of viewing the film was "to watch time passing." This film marked the start of Warhol's abundant filmmaking and photography career, making him a household name and a symbol of the city, a recognition that lived on even after his death. Between 1976 and 1986, Warhol was never seen without a camera, shooting about a roll of film per day. He had an innate understanding of city life and film was just another avenue for Warhol to indulge his penchant for observation.

About the artist

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement. Warhol's art used many types of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music. He was also a pioneer in computer-generated art using Amiga computers. Warhol's life and work were marked by controversy, his open embrace of celebrity culture, and his collaboration with many of the leading artists of his time.
