About this artwork

Andy Warhol's iconic Campbell's Soup Cans are some of the most well-known and admired pieces in the world of art. Around 1961, Warhol started his series of Campbell's Soup Can paintings, a theme he would revisit and reinterpret many times over the years. The most extensive and well known series of these paintings are the Ferus type, named after the thirty-two individual can paintings displayed at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. For these creations, Warhol meticulously painted the iconic red and white cans, using a product listing provided by the Campbell Soup Company as a reference, ticking off each soup variety as he finished painting it. In a subsequent series from around 1965, Warhol introduced a set of nineteen different coloured cans. These pieces diverged from the realistic colour palette of the original series as Warhol employed inks in non-standard colours, also opting to spray paint the backgrounds and the lower section of the label in various hues. This resulted in an assortment that was both unexpected yet familiar. Through these pioneering pieces, Warhol provoked us to rethink our perceptions of art.
