About this artwork

Andy Warhol's fascination with footwear dates back to the early 50s. His unique blotted line sketches of shoes, particularly high heels, played a significant role in his commercial and fine art career. He illustrated shoes for I. Miller and Glamour magazine, and even named shoes after celebrities - including high heels named Julie Andrews, Kate Smith, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, and cowboy boots tagged Elvis Presley and James Dean. These shoe illustrations varied from highly stylised to playful, but always maintained an air of elegance. In 1955, Warhol released A la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, a book filled with illustrations of imaginative shoe designs. By 1980, he was prepared to delve back into one of his favourite topics. This is when he created his Diamond Dust Shoes series, using crushed glass particles to create a dazzling, sparkling effect. He successfully merged some of his favourite themes in the Diamond Dust Shoe paintings - the glamour of movie stars, high fashion, and wealth. These paintings were created during the era when the disco, lamé, and stilettos of Studio 54 had seised the fancy of Manhattan's elite. Warhol, a prominent figure in the New York club scene since the early 60s, managed to encapsulate the spirit of his times through his art once again.
