About this artwork

Andy Warhol's fascination with shoes dates back to the early 1950s. His distinctive blot-style drawings of shoes, particularly high heels, were a key component of his career as both a commercial and fine artist. Warhol created shoe illustrations for brands like I. Miller and publications such as Glamour magazine, and even named many of his shoe designs after famous actors, dancers, and singers - think high heels dubbed Julie Andrews, Kate Smith, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, and cowboy boots named after Elvis Presley and James Dean. These shoes could be highly stylised or playful, but they were always sophisticated. In 1955, Warhol released A la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, a book decorated with illustrations of imaginative shoes. Fast forward to 1980, and Warhol was ready to dive back into one of his favorite subjects. It was during this period that he produced his Diamond Dust Shoes using crushed glass particles - a shimmery powder that sparkled. With the Diamond Dust Shoe paintings, he managed to blend a few of his favorite elements - the glitz and glamour of movie stars, high fashion, and wealth. The Diamond Dust Shoe artworks were created just as the disco, lamé, and stilettos of Studio 54 had seised the fascination of Manhattan's high society. Having been a trendsetter in the New York club scene since the early '60s, Warhol once again mirrored the era he was living in through his artwork.
