About this artwork

August Macke was a key figure in German Expressionism and he managed to merge his artistic style with the emergence of the Avant-Garde trend in Europe. He created 'Russian Ballet' in 1912, where he presented a subjective, abstract impression of ballet from the viewpoint of those in the royal circle. The painting starts to lose its perspective and instead, takes on an ornamental, two-dimensional quality with its abstract shapes.

About the artist

August Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter. His works are characterised by a spontaneous use of colour and a conscious rejection of the naturalistic representation of objects. Macke's personal life was marked by tragedy; his wife Elisabeth died in 1912 and his only son died in 1913. He was killed in World War I at the age of 27.
