About this artwork

The scene you're seeing is captured from the first-floor windows of Ginner's house located at 61 Hampstead High Street. It highlights the festive decorations spread across the street opposite, known as Flask Walk, in honour of George VI's coronation on 12 May 1937. Ginner had settled into this house back in 1919, occupying the upper four floors above the shop. He most frequently painted this view just before moving out in 1938, capturing the scene on Guy Fawkes Day and during a snowy day, both in 1937. The painting's composition is so intricately detailed that it's speculated Ginner might have used a telescope or something similar.

About the artist

Born in Cannes, France, on March 4, 1878, Charles Ginner eventually became a central figure within the Camden Town Group in England. After spending nearly ten years in Paris, Ginner moved to London where his knowledge of modern European art distinguished him among his peers. Malcolm Drummond's iconic 1911 portrait, unveiled at the group's second exhibition, portrays Ginner as a nonchalant, stylish artist. Despite spending his later years in England, Ginner proudly maintained his French accent.
