About this artwork

The northern bank of the River Thames underwent a massive transformation between 1864 and 1870 with the construction of Victoria Embankment. This change was part of the wider modernisation of the city, which included better looking public parks and reclamation of the river bank. One such park, depicted here, is nestled in Westminster, not far from the Houses of Parliament. You can spot Big Ben on the left and Victoria Tower on the right from this park. If you look closely, you can also catch a glimpse of the statue of William Tyndale, the Protestant martyr, in the middle ground.

About the artist

Born in Cannes, France, on March 4, 1878, Charles Ginner eventually became a central figure within the Camden Town Group in England. After spending nearly ten years in Paris, Ginner moved to London where his knowledge of modern European art distinguished him among his peers. Malcolm Drummond's iconic 1911 portrait, unveiled at the group's second exhibition, portrays Ginner as a nonchalant, stylish artist. Despite spending his later years in England, Ginner proudly maintained his French accent.
