About this artwork

Nevinson first set foot in New York in 1919 and was instantly enthralled by its architectural marvels, even claiming that the city was 'built for me'. He used this trip to create several artistic sketches. 'New York-An Abstraction' is a painting he completed in London after his trip to New York and just before he went back for another exhibition. This artwork portrays an invented portion of the elevated railway that winds through Manhattan. His follow-up exhibition, however, didn't go over well, which may have led to Nevinson’s growing disillusionment with the city. This could also be why he decided to retitle his painting in 1925 to 'Soul of the Soulless City'.

About the artist

Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson was a British modernist painter and printmaker. He was a member of the London Group and the Camden Town Group, and was one of the most famous war artists of World War I. Nevinson studied at the Slade School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris. His early works were influenced by cubism and futurism, and he later developed a more figurative style. He was a prolific painter, producing a wide range of works including landscapes, portraits, and abstracts.

Also associated with: The Vorticists, The London Group, The Great War, The Western Front, The Royal Academy, The Imperial War Museum.
