About the artist

E.W. Robinson (1824–1883), a 19th-century British School artist, illustrated natural history books like Wallace's The Malay Archipelago and Bates's The Naturalist on the River Amazons. Initially an engraver, Robinson transitioned to watercolour and other mediums due to photography's impact on engraving. He likely learned from his relative, artist John Henry Robinson (1796–1871). They collaborated on projects like Shakespeare's bust engraving (E.W. Robinson drew; H. Robinson engraved). E.W. Robinson's diverse portfolio included coloured plates for the Zoological Society of London's Proceedings.
