About this artwork

In the early 1900s, numerous artists, Pablo Picasso included, found inspiration in the straightforward, stylised visuals created by societies outside of the Western world. Consequently, Picasso created a collection of simple animal sketches, like 'Le chien' (the dog), each made with a single, continuous line.

About the artist

Pablo Picasso , born 25 October 1881 and died 8 April 1973, was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. His work is often categorised into periods, with the Blue Period (1901-1904) and the Rose Period (1904-1906) being the most famous. Picasso's personal life was often tumultuous, with multiple marriages and affairs, and he had four children from three different women. He was also a political activist and a prolific artist, producing over 20,000 works of art in his lifetime.
